Debbie Smith is a woman who has earned respect over the years through her continued battle to honor her son's life, death, music and her unfaltering determination to impact the lives of other creative souls who suffer from a condition which is often left untreated.

Sean Costello was one of the brightest lights to burst upon the scene in the blues world.  As an up and coming star, he fell to darkness on April 15, 2008.  The Delta Groove Artist released Going Home, a poignant and perhaps telling song 14 months earlier.

Today, Sean's impact on the Blues industry is honored by two organizations.  First, the Blues Blast Magazine, which created and accepts nominations to the Sean Costello Rising Star Award.  Past nominees include: Eden Brant; Gina Sicilia; Damon Fowler; John Nemeth; Marquise Knox; Trampled Under Foot and Cash Box Kings.  The second, is the Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research.  Like her son, there is No Half Steppin' for his mother, Debbie.

WHAT: The Emory University Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program and The Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research are sponsoring a series of lectures on bipolar disorder, accompanied by performances by creative people who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The first lecture, "What is Type II Bipolar Disorder?" will be held at 6 PM, Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at the Briarcliff Campus of Emory University, 1256 Briarcliff Rd, Building A, 3rd Floor Auditorium, Atlanta, Georgia 30306. Light refreshments will be provided.

We are looking for artists in any creative genre who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Performances/exhibits will be held in conjunction with each lecture. If interested, artists can contact Debbie Smith at debbie@seancostellofund.org.

The topics are appropriate for any audience, including families, caregivers, educators and people wanting to know more about the disease.

Baton Rouge Blues Festival

If anyone is looking for an excuse to go to Baton Rouge, the Blues Festival this weekend might make a good one. The more I read about the line up, the more I had to restrain myself from actually clicking on the Expedia App on my phone.

In addition to some of the Swamp Blues of the region, toss in a little bit of Kansas. It's not really just Kansas, it's Kansas with an eclectic spin. Like BBQ with various spice influences. When I think of Kansas, I think of My Grandmother, Ribs, Royals, Twisters, Dorothy, Irish Dance Scholarships, nice people and .... one of my favorite lesser known duo's, although it escapes me as to why, Moreland & Arbuckle. They will be playing tomorrow night at The Blues Festival in addition to Delbert McClinton, Jimmie Vaughn and others.

I became aware of Aaron Moreland and Dustin Arbuckle prior to the release of 1861. I have almost as much patience in waiting for a much anticipated music release, as I do for books. So, as with books, I started to listen to their previous artistic endeavors. I started my research with Caney Valley Blues and found a song named "Red Bricks." From that moment on, Moreland and Arbuckle, garnered my creative respect. Another song made it's way to my playlist in '08 named "Fishin' Hole off the 1861 release.

Signed by Telarc, they released Flood, earlier this year.

Aurora, home to the 1930's RCA Bluebird Recording Studio in The Leland Hotel, recorded hundred's of songs considered precursers to the early Urban Blues, by artists such as Big Bill Broonzy, Roosevelt Sykes, Tampa Red, Sonny Boy Williamson and John Lee Hooker among others.

The only catch, it's a bring your own chair event. "Libations" frozen or otherwise, are extra. Attendees would be wise not to bring their own.

There are several "Oh hell no" categories of music in my world: Techno, Trance, Industrial Goth, and Rap. They just hurt my head. Literally. Or so I thought.

Twice this week I have found myself listening to things that would shock my traditional blues sensibilities.

The first was to a young friend of my son's. That can be easily explained away. He has been out trying to get gigs, I have an odd interest in struggling young artists. I spent a while talking to him in my driveway about his music. My son went to one of his gigs on the south side of Chicago. I smiled as they said they were the only ones who didn't get searched. He has a long way to go, but he has that crazy sense about him that musicians and writers have, when they know that is what they are supposed to be doing. I like the fact he has his own sense of style. I can't say I have ever heard classical music, rap verbage, and a smattering of Polish mixed together, but it works for him. I just might even check back to see if live videos are added.

Today I bought my first... I can't bring myself to say it... (Rap single.) I am sure I blew their whole demographic statistical deviance. I probably would have bought a whole CD, but single was my only choice. And... it's not really rap. Sure it has GLC and Twista. But, it's Chicago. It's Chicago musicians. After Mystery, you never know what to expect from the baby Brooks. But from the first few bars you know, it's blues. Blues infused with a lil soul, hip-hop, rap, chicago blues. Sorta like a strawberry smoothie, with a bunch of other fruits thrown in for flavor, but down deep, at it's core, it's a strawberry. So there... coughs.. I didn't really buy a rap Download from itunes, I bought BLUES.

Besides, I had to buy it. It has one of my all time favorite Grammy winning Blues men.... Sugar Blue on Harmonica. It's got blues guitar, awesome drums, and talented keyboardist. But the whipped cream on top of this smoothie? MiMi Brooks. She wove a blues feeling all through the track from beginning to end. With any luck, we will all hear more of MiMi Brooks and this Chi Town Music out of Mr. Wayne Baker Brooks in the near future. I feel so incomplete, just buying a single.

One of These Days (You're Gonna Realize)

It's that time of year, when Blues Lovers often wander down south in their musical taste to sample a little Swamp music. Here is a fun one, featuring Love Potions and Snake Oil by D.B. Rielly set to more movies than I can mention.

For me, Mardi Gras does not mean beads and body parts on Fat Tuesday. Maybe it is because I experienced it, before I had either, or maybe there was just a different emphasis in the 1970's. Mardi Gras was my first experience with music that makes your feet move, and I never forgot it.

My first cultural immersion experience started right after the season began and lasted a week. It is and was a veritable sensory explosion, on all fronts: Musicians jamming in unexpected places all times of the day and night; Scents of regional foods wafting through the night air simply not found in Central Illinois; and lastly, the vivid images of the Krewes and bright costumes started my love affair with Mardi Gras and regional music.

I suppose, a sentimental aspect to the music exists as well. It brings back memories of being nearly fifteen and experiencing Louisiana for the first time. Doing the tourist things, a Mint Julep at the Court of the Two Sisters, Beignets and Chicory Coffee at Cafe du Monde, getting up the courage to go into a VooDoo shop, being shoed back to my hotel before anyone discovered I was out adventuring, only to repeat it day after day, and finally getting lost in the music and recognizing nothing had ever made me feel quite like that.

Maybe, just maybe I might get around to taking a road trip. I know two things. One, I won't be there on Fat Tuesday. And two, I think I would have to keep a sharper eye on my offspring. Something tells me, their feet would be moving too.

Did you ever wonder about chainsaws? Where did they come from, and why?

I admit, I have never looked at where "Chainsaws" originated before today, and it was a bone shivering tale Wiki revealed. Some think the toothy chained invention was created by a German orthopedic surgeon in the early 1800's. Fortunately, the new and improved Chainsaw provides superior healing, and a far more pleasurable experience.

David Dupont is not a Chicago native, but he is Chicago Blues, with a whole lot of diversity. One of the draws to this artist is his ability to break out into his own individual style, and yet equally be seen as a traditional blues artist. He grew up in the Delta, and moved here when he was 14. His earlier guitar days include reggae and country, as well as blues, most notably touring with Junior Wells as his guitarist.

Blues fans are fickle. What have you done for us lately, Chainsaw? Well if you are a Chicagoan, history buff, or a well informed tourist, you might have heard of the Maxwell Street Market. Once upon a time, blues musicians jammed there. Dupont helped to revitalize this tradition by hosting a jam session on Sunday mornings during the past summer. Now that, is a tradition no sports team can rival, even in Chicago. We hope to see more of him in that capacity in warmer weather.

Who Was August Wilson?

August Wilson is not related to Alex Wilson or any other blues musicians. Nor is he my Black History Month artistic pick. He is one of those people, when you meet them, they command your immediate respect. Only, I never met him. I only know what he left behind.

I first saw a tattered copy, of a bound play in a used bookstore, The Frugal Muse. It was red, wrinkled and ancient. I immediately liked it, especially for a quarter. Expecting a book about the legendary female blues singer, I thumbed through, and realized it was a play, set on the South Side of Chicago during the 1920's. I had never heard of him, or it! How could that be? Who was this guy?

Wilson was an amazing voice in the world of writing. He grew up poor in Pittsburgh, and lived a mere sixty years, before passing within two months of a liver cancer diagnosis.

He choose to wield a pen, not a pick or a brush. His art and calling, was writing, particularly, scriptwriting. Blues, significantly influenced the writer's life, intentions and art. He knew enough about the music, history, and good storytelling, to write and catch the nuance's of recording musicians to get his play produced at Yale in 1984. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is a behind the scenes historical glance at blues studio artists, contrasted with one indomitable female blues singer. Wilson's play has become a must see of the Blues Community.

Today, I saw on a newsfeed, The American Stage Theatre Company has extended the run of "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" one extra week through Feb 20, at the Raymond James Theatre. I think it's the perfect solution to the blizzard of 2011. There is a reason it was nominated for a Tony Award.

Wilson became a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright. He is also known for such thought provoking productions as; Fences, Joe Turner's Come and Gone; and Radio Golf.

Blues music fans in Poland were "Spectified," or at least introduced to "The West Side Strut," during Specter's Monday night performance. The Chicago Blues musician is finishing his European tour with Harmonica Hinds this week performing in Warsaw, Poland, at The Lucerne Blues Fest in Switzerland, and finishing the tour in Barcelona. His latest release "Spectified" made its debut earlier in the year. Specter plays Chicago House of Blues on November, 18, 2010.

Tommy Johnson doesn't have a headstone where he is buried. Bonnie Raitt contributed to one ten years ago. Where is it? Caught in the Crossroads of a long conflict, with little progress in the negotiation.

The Family of Tommy Johnson, The owners of a farm, and the Copiah County Board of Supervisors can't seem to come to the table to hammer out a win-win for all parties.

Crystal Springs, Mississippi is the home to 5,873 residents. Founded in 1823, the Copiah County town became the "Tomatopolis of the World." Over history, many famous blues musicians have stepped foot into Crystal Springs. Significantly more tourists come to see the Robert Johnson Blues Museum and attend the blues festival.

The grave of the Blues Artist is unmarked, as it has been for a half a century at the Warm Springs Methodist Church Cemetery. The past ten years, the headstone has been stored at the public library for the Tommy Johnson Blues Foundation in Crystal Springs. Most reasonable people would ask,"Why?" at this point. It seems the cemetery access road now lies on private property, and the owners (Keating) have denied access to Johnson's family several times, to allow them to place the headstone of their descendant.

Mention Tommy Johnson and Robert Johnson in the same sentence, and most assume the conversation will be about the long controversy of which Johnson is "The Johnson," and met the Devil at the Crossroads. There are many articles and books on the subject. About.com's Blues Guide states: " Robert must have been the better negotiator of the two (unrelated) musicians because Tommy Johnson became a mere footnote in the blues genre.."

How is it that an access road to a cemetery, once maintained by the Copiah County authority, is now private property? Why would anyone want to deny passage to a cemetery to allow a marker to be placed? What logical basis could possibly exist? Perhaps the owners are oblivious to the Blues world, and the Blues community. The one in which Buddy Guy sings "Skin Deep" and the majority of genre fans believe, "There is no black, no white, just blues."

Problems without solutions are whining. Two solutions might be to engage in an arbitration process and negotiate in good faith to insure the real issues are addressed and a timely outcome would result. An alternative suggestion could be to have the three parties Come On In My Kitchen and sit around the table and study the meaning behind the lyrics of Canned Heat. I am certain the issue would be resolved in a relatively shorter time frame.

I was sad to see, as I researched this article, how much has been written about this bizarre conflict over the past nine years, including an excellent blog post in the Sheyboygan Blues Society and an article on this morning's Topix Blues newsfeed from Frost Illustrated. I read a Mississippi Senate Resolution to commemorate the life and legacy of Tommy Johnson. I saw a website that promoted T-shirts and encouraged readers to write the Governor of Mississippi. There is a deeper sense of injustice behind the story. One that brings to mind a man, who once a long time ago, simply said, "Do justice." Then there is the question of how we treat our neighbors in our community. That man, told us to "Love our neighbors as ourselves." The appearance of land deals, inept government, and lack of urgency steeped in bureaucracy, I leave to those who practice Law, and hopefully justice. I want to acknowledge Andrew Buncombe of the U.K. for shedding further light on the issue in 2003.

What will it take for a man to be allowed to finally rest in peace? Do justice.

Remembering and Honoring Blues Artists - Detroit Style

Detroit Blues Society Headstone Project

One of several 2010 goals and objectives listed by the non-profit include honoring, marking and recognizing two of Detroit's deceased blues musician's. The first is Mr. Bo Collins (If Trouble was Money), originally from Mississippi. Bo settled in Detroit in the earlly 1950's. The second is Harmonica player, Uncle Jessie White, White was also a Mississippi native and became endeared to many including Harmonica Shaw, Ann Rabson and many more.

In the blues world, it is not uncommon for another member of the community to secure a grave marker. Janis Joplin ensured her mentor's grave had a headstone, 33 years after the passing of the Empress of The Blues, Bessie Smith. The DBS started this project in 1997, ensuring Son House had a Headstone, believing "Proper recognition of deceased Detroit Blues greats is vital to teach history and to keep the music alive through remembrances."

BMA - Hours Remain To Cast Votes

Blues fans, and conceivably more so the artists, wait with anticipation for the announcement of the coveted Blues Music Awards. With less than 24 hours remaining to vote in the The Blues Foundation's 31st Blues Music Awards, members are encouraged to vote before Monday, March 1, 2010 at 07:59:59. Non-current members may sign up and then vote.

What is one more vote? Often the deciding factor. Joe Whitmer, in a gentle nudge email reminder to procrastinating members, stated that in the past, categories had been decided by as little as 10 votes. As The Blues Music Awards are "Universally recognized as the highest honor given to Blues artists," many feel voting is not only a right, but a responsibility as well.

Those entries with the most votes in each of the following categories will be celebrating in Memphis on May 6. Tickets are available through the website and are non-refundable. It is, however, one of the best shows, a blues fan can see. The true difficulty, is selecting just one in each category.

This Saturday, a musical extravaganza unlike any other will take place at the historical Chicago site, The Congress Theater on North Milwaukee.

Thirteen hours of live music will be provided by twenty-five highly talented, extremely diverse and mostly local bands.

Included in the line up is this year's three time Grammy nominated Bela Fleck. Bela is no stranger to Grammy's having garnered six in the past, and nominated for many more. One of The Blues Foundation's 2009 IBC competitors, The Alex Wilson Band is scheduled to perform at 3:20 pm. Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater, another local blues favorite is also on the schedule for 4:30pm.

Tickets are $35 in advance through the website. Children are welcome, and those 12 and under are free. Not surprising for this genre, partial proceeds will be donated to two children's charities, Saving Tiny Hearts and Prevent Child Abuse America.

Another 501(C)3, Rock The Earth, will provide a cell phone recycling opportunity at their table. Several contests and give-aways are offered through the main website.

Additionally, unique holiday shopping opportunities abound for those who appreciate roots music, including a limited edition Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Festival T-shirt for $10. Approximately 50 vendors and organizations will be on the premise.

Attendees are encouraged to bring an instrument for informal jam sessions and a camping chair.

Sitting in Buddy Guy's darkened blues club, Legends, while enjoying the Big Bayou Blue Plate and checking my notes, various conversations drifted past. It was the night of the IBC regional finals. Only three of the eleven acts would be making the trip to Beale Street in January, including the single youth entry. They were to be judged by an impressive list of "Who's Who in Blues," albeit all male, on "Talent, Vocal, Blues Content, Stage Presence and Originality" according to The Blues Foundation.

Several hours later, I came away with three observations:

First, anyone from Chicago can be proud of the quality of talented artists that stepped on stage;
Second, at the risk of sounding sophomoric, after the initial disappointment for those who wouldn't compete, came the realization that the success, was not about who performed best with such close votes on that particular evening;
And, third, I can't imagine not writing about them in the near future. There were no losers in Legends, at least that performed. The musicians who played on stage are not the future of Chicago Blues. They are indeed the present.

Three acts competed in the solo/duo category, each with a vastly different style from each other. First up was Southsider Diamond Jim Greene, who demonstrated his wonderful storytelling in the tradition of fine Delta Masters. Watching him play his guitars, I became acutely aware of my ignorance, and wondered how I had missed such a talent. I will go see him again. And again. And you should too.

Nigel Mack, was also impressive, managing to play harmonica and guitar at the same time, and maintain an engaging stage presence. He did well with Willie Dixon and Robert Johnson as well as his own original song which will be on his upcoming CD, Chicago Bound. That will make the Christmas list here. Originally from Canada, Nigel has been in the area since 2003. He, too, is on the must see list.

Last, Matt Hendricks with Bill Curtiss on drums, gave an outstandingly solid performance. I usually can place a dialect, but not his. His song Crawdaddy and If You See Me were clearly marks of exceptional songwriting talent. A modest man, he told the crowd after accepting the award, "I'll make you proud in Memphis." I suspect he will do just that. You can spend New Year's Eve with him at Legends, if you want to see him sooner.

I found myself wishing we could send three.

As if deciding between those apples and oranges wasn't hard enough, the bands were even more diverse. The $15 cover charge, which goes to help defray costs to the winners, was well worth the chance to see all of the performers.

First up was Dave Herrero. It was my first time seeing him, and I liked what I saw. Dave had excellent crowd involvement and the air of a true entertainer. Not only did the words, playful and fun describe him, so did, savvy and intuitive. I nearly spit out my sweet tea however, when he educated the crowd on his ethnic composition. I love a musician who can make me laugh. Dave has a couple other things going for him as well. Uncle Felix on the bass, a drummer whose name I didn't catch, and a new CD. Add another to the shopping list. You can catch his Austin to Chicago CD on cdbaby.com. It is described as "A vintage Texas blues sound with a modern twist." But go see him live, you won't be sorry.

Next was Linsey Alexander delivering an interesting set. He is cut from a similar cloth to many of my personal favorites, I enjoyed the set, up until the last song and comment. He ended it doing a cover of The Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See?" because there were so many "Caucasion faces in the crowd." I have to ask, if my skin had been darker, would we have got a better song? It certainly isn't one that's listed on his CDs. But, I really can't hold one song choice against him, at least for long. I would hire him, if I could afford him.

Toronzo Cannon was, well I can't reprint my notes, because I used a word that gets censored a lot. But let's just say, he was fricking fantastic. Four members, all energetic, original music, worked the crowd. He is at Blue Chicago on November 27 and 28 with Big Time Sarah. Start a new black friday tradition, his CD My Woman,should fit any blues lover's christmas stocking.

The Alex Wilson Band was one of the most exciting surprises of the night. Matthew and Marc Wilson along with Alex, delivered true "Red, Hot, Smokin' Blues" and yet there was something completely fresh including original songwriting. I had the sense of a new voice in blues, one that would appeal not to just those of the blues rock fervor, but to those of the next generation of blues fans. Look for the "The Moon is Shining" from their Tell Me Why CD. If you want to catch them in Chicago, check them out on 12/12/09 at the Bluegrass and Blues Festival according to their website.

Rockin' Johnny added yet another dimension of blues with a style that blended from folk blues to rockabilly and back. The words "Modern King of the Chicago Westside Blues Guitar" have been coined on such sites as Myspace. Johnny had two CD releases in the late 1990's - Man's Temptation and Straight Out Of Chicago. I want to see him in six months, my guess is, he will be better than he was before taking a break from the scene.

Chainsaw Dupont put on a great show, one that most didn't mind waiting for. He is a long time Chicago favorite. Chainsaw has four CD's out on CDBaby, with more coming. He performed Flame of Love from his Ghost Kings of Beale St 2007 CD. That one made the list as well. See him at www.chainsawdupont.com

The woman of the night, was Grana Louise. At 56, dressed to the nines, she tossed her shoes early on, and belted out blues as only a true "Mojo Mama" can. Her song, Big Fat Daddy, from her Generations CD brought smiles and laughs to the crowd. Grana also managed to evoke crowd participation, as she moved into an acapella number. She has the ability to wander into soul and gospel territory and back to ribald blues women. Just like the city she will represent,she is diverse, larger than life, and one suspects, has a big heart.

Who will be found to be the best unsigned blues band at the 26th International Blues Challenge? The band, that garners the most votes, based upon who plays the best from Jan. 20 - 23 in Memphis.

The International Blues Challenge is one of my favorite events, as it helps to launch many relatively unknown talents, who have worked hard to be recognized. I began taking note of Fiona Boyes when she became an IBC winner in 2003. As a one time listener of ABS internet radio, her upbeat friendly voice could be heard coming to you from Melbourne, Australia. Recently, I had the fortune of seeing Fiona on at least three separate occasions. I also had the unexpected pleasure of having lunch with the finger picking guitarist extraordinaire, and her husband, Steve, The Preacherman, who is ordained and has an interesting story to tell as well. Between the two of them, they make a team that works in the industry.

Laurie Morvan is sure to Fire It Up!

Laurie Morvan is one of the hottest guitar wielding blues women in California. Tall, blond, leggy and can play too. Recently on the Pacific Blues Cruise, Laurie improvised a set with a drummer who played a cardboard box and a plastic tote lid under the tent of "Big City Rhythm & Blues." Junior and Sugar's humor and random musicians joining in made the jam an unexpected highlight on the pool deck. And then there was Laurie's genuine warmth and ability to read and connect with people, converting strangers into fans in record time.

Laurie is a born and bred Illinoisan from the New Lenox, Joliet, Plainfield area. She is also a University of Illinois Engineering Graduate and volleyball team player. So, how did this talented blues artist manage to escape the corn and soybeans? She took a day job in LA, but in Aerospace, not music. Music was reserved for her night time hobbies. She was a rocker, until she discovered Stevie Ray Vaughn. Earning her Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics, Laurie raised money for her passion by teaching college courses.

Her first release was in 1997. Since then, she has put out three more. The third CD, "Cure What Ails Ya," is what launched The Laurie Morvan Band and brought them well deserved recognition in not only the media, but by advancing as a finalist in two separate categories at the 2008 IBC awards in Memphis.

Her newest release, "Fire It Up," promises to be her best. Twelve original songs, written by her, backed by her band, and delivered with the feeling a Midwestern native can evoke. Songs include; Lay Your Hands, Let Me Carry Your Troubles, Come On Over To My BBQ, Livin' in a Mans World, and Cafe Boogaloo, named after a real juke joint. Laurie noted on the cruise, that since there were so many songs dedicated to "Big Legged Women" that she felt Skinny Chicks needed love too,and so was born yet another playful, fun original song on the CD.

Born in Chattanooga, TN, Bessie Smith sang on street corners, until she was old enough to join a traveling theater company as a dancer in 1912. The Moses Stokes theater company was home to one of the first classic blues singers, Ma Rainey. It was she who taught Bessie about stage presence.

Bessie made her debut with Columbia Records singing Downhearted Blues in the early 1920's. Her recording of St. Louis Blues is considered by critics to be one of the finest from the era.

"The Empress of Blues" was in her early 40's when she passed away from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Her last performance was given in Memphis on Sept. 26, 1937. Late that night, Richard Morgan and Bessie Smith were in a tragic car accident headed South on Highway 61. They never made it to their next destination.

Cynthia Blank-Reid, an associate professor at Drexel University College of Nursing, in Philadelphia, recently reviewed the circumstances of the accident, treatment, and resulting death of the singer. Bessie's fatal crash and the surrounding rumors are clarified, compared and contrasted to the actual treatment and the probable treatment of today.

Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Mahalia Jackson claim Bessies influence. Her grave was unmarked until 1970. It was Janis Joplin who paid for the gravestone.

On the left is a guitar icon, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 and will be playing on Valentines Day with Eric Clapton (for those of you who want to plan in advance). Most can guess Jeff Beck circa the 1970's. So, who is the guy with Jeff Beck?

The man with him, has made his own contribution to music, especially the blues genre, and like Beck, is still at it. Can't guess?

He's a syndicated DJ, writer/reviewer, producer, co-founder of the Boise Blues Society, creator of www.radiothrills.com, Norman Davis. Davis began his career in radio in the 1950's and still produces a great weekly show, including an on demand podcast for blues lovers. Midnight Flyer 59b

Norman clearly gets the blues, as reflected in his programming. To quote from his webpage;

It's not the Olympics, but blues aficionados who enjoyed Buddy Guy's video for the presentation in Copenhagen will have something to look forward to in The Windy City. The Second Annual 2009 Blues Blast Music Awards will be held in Sweet Home Chicago on October 29th.

Over 20 confirmed artists will perform to a standing room only crowd at Buddy Guy's infamous club, Legends. Kenny Neal's, "Let Life Flow," and B.B. King's, "See That My Grave is Kept Clean," are among the list of nominees for Best Blues Song. Eden Brent and Nick Moss & The Flip Tops are in contention for 3 awards each. Local favorites include Lurrie Bell, Shirley Johnson and "Blues in the Schools" founder, Billy Branch. Two up and coming bands, The Kilborn Alley Blues Band and Cedric Burnside & Lightnin' Malcolm both vie for the Sean Costello Rising Star Award. Shemekia Copeland and Janiva Magness will both look to take home the Best Contemporary Blues Recording award.

Tickets are $25, general admission and first come first served. They aren't kidding when they say arrive early. Even if it's standing room, location is everything.

Almost everyone in Chicago knows that the International Olympic Congress will be meeting soon in Copenhagen to decide which city will host the 2016 Olympic Games. We are sending our greatest ambassadors to state our case, however, their names might be overlooked.

The legacy of Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Koko Taylor, John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon and others, will be overheard in the streets of Copenhagen during that meeting. What better way to introduce the Windy City, to give a sense of who we are, than to feel the Chicago Blues -electrified, amped, and a little sax added now and then.

"Chicago Blues" is the theme of the ninth annual Copenhagen Blues Festival, set to start on the 29th. To insure they will be celebrating the Sweet Home Chicago way, this years international stars, include two of Chicago's own, Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater, Jimmy Johnson and the Mike Anderson Band.

Imagine more than 60 Blues concerts in 20 different venues in 6 days. "FREE" concerts every afternoon. Local, national and international talent, blended in a club based concept. This diverse immersion experience has gained popularity each year far surpassing the original purpose to widen the knowledge of and promote interest in the blues regionally.

Opening ceremonies include the gathering of local and national musicians in contention for the "Danish Blues Musician of the Year," at Mojo's Blues Bar. The recipient receives 10,000 kroner along with the award and title. (10,000 Danish Krone = 1,978.69 US Dollar)

Of course many Chicago Blues fans will be anxiously awaiting a different kind of announcement that will come from Copenhagen in six days and nineteen hours according to the www.chicago2016.org countdown clock. The award and title are immeasurable. At this point, 20 olympians, Oprah, Michelle Obama, and Mayor Daley will make the final pitch.

The surprise for me came with the Brooklyn born, one time legendary athlete, who made a sweet home in Chicago, and was adored and supported by a city, is now apparently too busy to go to Copenhagen. Then again, I don't see him as the type to hang down at Legends, either. I wonder what is his favorite genre of music, even Wiki doesn't know. It is with irony, that I just donated the book, "I Can't Accept Not Trying," to the Salvation Army. I have a feeling a few of us, just might feel that way. But at least, there is nothing truer, than the legacy of the Chicago Blues, and hopefully all of Copenhagen will see it in the upcoming week.

A Different Kind of Blues Artist - Diane Russell

As I skimmed the Blues newsfeed this morning, I came across a hidden gem, "a show" in the Portland area. Normally I would just keep pressing the down arrow, but I noticed it named one of my favorite bluesmen, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, who once did A Song for Renee. Indulge me, good songs about "Renee" are rare.

When I edit, I often see a story within a story, an alternate focus, or a completely different perspective besides the one presented. It allows me to indulge in tangents of choice, explore and find obscure connections, or other words, justify my writing.

The show featured another artist, one I was not familiar with, Diane Russell. Russell isn't quite on par with Etta, Koko, Shemekia, or Bonnie and you won't see her performing at Buddy Guy's Legends, Rosa's Lounge or any other blues club for that matter. However, Ms. Russell is in a class by herself and can be found at gallery shows.

While I took one last browse at Russell's website, all I could envision was a Women in Blues series, particularly Koko Taylor. I guess it goes back to that editing style quirk of mine and tangents.

Today, Kenny Wayne Shepherd is making a difference to children around the world, who are in need of medical treatment. Kenny has donated his Custom 1950 Ford Classic, which will be auctioned today to help Mending Kids International.

MKI, a private organization, helps children who would not be able to receive the care in their own countries. They also send teams of Doctor's to other countries to perform surgeries. MKI also seeks host families in the LA area who are able to assist the children while they are in the country for procedures.

Kenny's Ford Coupe should bring quite a pretty penny. Kenny, however is busy today. He will be the Grand Marshall at the Michigan International Speedway. The avid Nascar fan will be performing a postrace concert there tonight.

Lester William Polsfuss was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin on June 9, 1915. Today, the blues world lost another great.

The guitar legend, Les Paul, died today at the age of 94, suffering from medical complications at White Plains Hospital.

"The world has lost a truly innovative and exceptional human being today. I cannot imagine life without Les Paul," said Henry Juszkiewicz, chairman and chief executive officer of Gibson Guitar.

Paul is the only individual who has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Like so many of the genre, he will be missed.

It's summer, and that means, Iverson Minter, will return from Germany and tour the US during July. The Guitarist has played with the best Blues Musicians in Chicago and Detroit, and won a W.C. Handy Award for Best Traditional Blues Male Artist in 1983. His newest recording was released earlier this year, made in Norway, "Back To The Black Bayou."

It's long been said that you have to live the blues in order to play them. Louisiana Red, born Iverson Minter in Bessemer, Ala., has seen more than his share of the adversity and hard times, and his songs are powerful, passionate reflections of his life.

His Father was lynched by the Klu-Klux-Klan, his Mother died at a young age. He grew up, into an artist that to this day, uses his emotions and improvises in live performances.

Notodden Blues Fest, Scandinavia's Largest Blues Party

Beth Hart, Buddy Guy, Shemekia Copeland, Joe Bonamassa, Homemade Jamz, Jools Holland, Cedric Burnside, and Robin Trower, to name but a few, will join with other talented European Blues Artists at the Notodden Blues Festival.

Twenty years ago, thirteen blues fans came together to arrange for a line of credit to hold the the first Notodden Blues Festival. Today the festival is one of the largest in Europe.

The Fest is held from July 30 to August 2.

Well Known LA Violinist Missing - Robert Alan Korda

Police and family ask the public's help in finding Robert Alan Korda, who was last seen in Van Nuys. He was to report to work at Gower Studios in Hollywood, and never arrived.

"It's weird," his son Noah Korda said. "My father is a non-drinker, non-gambler, non-smoker...he just completely disappeared."

Noah Korda said there has been no activity on any of his father's banking or credit card accounts since he vanished and there was no reason to believe the man had been upset or distressed about anything.

Korda is white with grey hair and brown eyes and a goatee. He is 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs about 135 pounds and wears eyeglasses.

He drives a white Geo Metro, California license plate 3GPJ453.

The Dutchess of Coolsville Keeps On Crooning

Most know this powerful American singer, for her 1979 hit, Chuck E's In Love, or her 1989 hit Makin' Whoopee, for which she won a Grammy.

Some know her as Tom Waits' lover from 1977 - 1980. (Or a year according to his biography written by Barney Hoskyns). The boho duo experienced career success at different times. As her career took off, Wait's grew emotionally distant, and the once touted next Joni Mitchell turned to heroin for comfort. Her insecurity, led her to be more dependent, and ultimately Waits made the decision to end the romance.

Drinking, drugs, a self proclaimed two year heroin addiction, and a 6 month cocaine slide after the break up, led to Pirates her second main album of what would eventually be fourteen. The Duchess of Coolsville is her Anthology album, released in 2005.

Influenced by Sarah Vaughn and Nina Simone, among many others, the talented Chicago born, Rickie Lee Jones, sang at President Clinton's Inauguration with Ratt Dog.

Rickie is still delivering original organic blues. It is rumored, Jones expects to release a new album in September. A review of her recent appearance from the Minneapolis Star Journal includes,

"Once she hits the stage, Rickie Lee Jones is fearless. Forget about the manic depression, the heartbreaks, the growing old."

Personality, stubbornness, and her refusal to fit into a singular commercial classification of a musical genre, have endeared her to her cultish following, for yet another decade.

Lurrie Bell is Everywhere!

Lurrie Bell caught my eye again today as Blue Bella Records sent a release announcing that he is appearing in my town on April 21 and bringing his buddies Nick Moss & The Fliptops. It is the best reason to hang out at Best Buy, that I can think of.

Bell's name is popping up everywhere lately. As I checked through several news feeds this weekend, I also saw he is featured on The new release of Chicago Blues: A Living History (Raisin 2009) which lays down 21 tracks of authentic style Chicago Blues.

Lurrie Bell, is a second generation Chicago Blues Artist, his Father Carey Bell, was a well respected Harmonica player. This child of the blues, without a doubt, is one of our greatest guitar players of his generation. If you are in the MidWest, you can see him on Beale Street in May, and at the Chicago Blues Fest in June. He has many credits to his name. Lurrie has made the cover of Living Blues, been nominated for several awards, and they just keep coming, but my favorite memory of him, is playing with Koko Taylor.

Those are all good reasons to be a fan of Lurrie, and even check out his MySpace and peek at www.lurie.com, but beyond the mundane, is a blues artist, who knows what life is in all it's extremes. It has never been better demonstrated than in this current version of Lurrie, that makes me absolutely love him. In his new CD, Let's Talk About Love, you can hear the depth and breath of emotion as played only by a man who has felt it personally. Unfortunately, that emotion came at great cost, losing his beloved partner Susan and his Father within a three and a half month period.

Lurrie's life has not been easy. He has had great loss and sorrow and knows what it is to struggle with Mental Illness. And yet, he serves as a source of great inspiration and even courage to many, who take the time to learn his story.

Eleanora’s Birthday Blues

A woman once said, “Don’t threaten me with love, baby. Let’s just go walking in the rain.” Her name was Eleanora Fagan Gough and today was her birthday.

Her tale is not a new story, teenagers, having babies, and a father leaving. Trials and tribulations of single parents in poverty are well known. And no one is really surprised to find out, a child born into that scenario could have been sentenced to a Catholic Reform School at age 10. It is a plot as old as time, and continues with a move to “The Big City” to become a prostitute, and later arrested for drug possession. Perhaps a plot twist you never see coming is a benefit concert for the Associated Communist Clubs of Harlem in May of ’44, earning her an FBI file and presumed censorship regarding an anti war song. Below is her mug shot from 1947.

Of course you can guess the ending, Eleanora Fagan Gough died broke and much too soon at age 44, a heroin addict, and finally succumbing to cirrhosis of the liver. The name most recognize is Billie Holiday. What makes her story different from the thousands of similar stories is what she did between those dates of life and death; however, finding reliable sources to document that mystery is some what of a challenge. Her autobiography, “Lady Sings the Blues” contains distorted facts and tales.

What is known of Eleanora is that she sang in local Harlem nightclubs, where in 1933 she met John Hammond, a record producer, and that is where her life takes on a very different sub-plot. She performed with Benny Goodman and made the local rounds, before settling on a stage name, borrowed from her favorite actress, Billie Dove. Her Father was “widely believed to be Clarence Holiday.” Her nickname, “Lady Day,” was given to her by friend and fellow musician, Lester Young.

Unlike many Jazz artists of the day, Billie Holiday sang with emotional intensity, showing the influence of Blues singers, Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. Her unique sound was also influenced by her friend, “Pres” (Lester Young)as well as Louis Armstrong, whom she reportedly called “Pops.”

I owe Eleanora for changing my perceptions on music. As a teenager, I first encountered Porgy and Bess at the local community theater. I was fairly certain that anyone named George and Ira Gershwin would not have music I would like. I was wrong, “Summertime” and “Porgy” resonated with me no matter what style it was called. “Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)” and “Strange Fruit” both won Grammy recognition. The singer defied labels.

Billie’s talents also included a gift for songwriting.

Davis further delves into the influence of her love songs and the impact of social consciousness in two separate chapters.

Her accomplishments and tributes include: A Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987; A Billie Holiday postage stamp in 1994; Induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000; Immortalized in 1959 by The Poet, Frank O’Hara, in ‘The Day Lady Died;” and lastly, U2’s 1988 release of Angel in Harlem, was inspired by Lady Day, as seen in the lyrics, “Lady Day’s got diamond eyes, she sees the truth behind the lies…Angel in the devils shoes, salvation in the blues.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0s-S5bLMz0

Like many creative, artistic temperaments, Billie suffered from addiction and depression. She also had her share of abusive relationships, which started at a young age. Like most great Blues Artists, her songs resonated with experience, not the “Tin Pan Ally”sound she so detested. Lady Day, took the inner strength of those experiences, and used it to transform and improvise lyrics and sounds to match the emotion of a song, common by Blues singers, uncommon for Jazz.

You won't find them in a City, or Chapter of any Blues Organization, and depending on your exposure and knowledge of 3D Virtual Worlds, your first thought might be, "SCAM."

For the second year in a row, a "Blues for Autism Event" is being held in Second Life until April 25th. A collective of real life musicians, DJ's, a consulting company, one of the most fun Blues Club's on Second Life and a Texan Grandmother with a vested interest and their friends came together in the spirit of fundraising for a great cause. And, they were successful.

The result, is surprising for a world where people are represented by pixels, but it reflects the camaraderie, inspiration, and dedication to help others, are near universal qualities in any blues community.

Blues Lovers nearly always remember the first time they experienced Buddy Guy live. It is not just the guitar playing, or the playful comments, or the sense of community he can create. Buddy in a subtle, and not so subtle manner, challenges his audience to think, about the future of Blues.

At 72 years of age, The Chicago Blues Legend, keeps a hectic tour schedule. Last Friday, 400 OSU students had the chance to see Buddy live.

He arrived on stage in a Nike sweat suit with a rhinestone encrusted guitar strap that read, "BG." He played upside down, with drumsticks, behind his back, and eventually ran into the crowd, playing his heart out...

For a musician who continually inspires and promotes young musicians, perhaps he found someone who will play the blues in Columbus, OH or Champaign, IL. or Greenbay, WI.

I thought I knew a lot about female Blues singers. But one day, I stopped and froze with the realization I didn't know who was singing. It wasn't Koko, Etta, Saphire, Janis, Bonnie Raitt, Rory Block, Susan Tedeschi, Shemika or Debra Davies. And it certainly wasn't any of the Blues Mavens from the 1920's and 1930's.

It’s that time of year when thoughts turn to Jazz, Cajun, Zydeco, Brass Bands, Jambalaya, Hurricanes (the drinkable kind) and Bourbon St. I fell in love with New Orleans, Mardi Gras, the music, the food, the atmosphere in 1976 and my Mother’s decision to celebrate the Bi-Centennial with travel by Amtrak. The woman had the audacity to drag me from my friends in High School to go to her Nurses Convention. That week I explored the French Quarter and surrounding areas from top to bottom. It was Carnival, but not Mardi Gras. Fortunately the Nurses were in sessions all day, and I was allegedly swimming and studying.

The first day, I sat in Jackson Square absorbing it all like a sponge. The sights, scents, and sounds were greedily devoured, and even hand feeding the pigeons near the fountain was memorable. I walked the entire area from Canal St. in fascination, my Midwestern perspective quickly expanding. Notable memories include a lady of the night perched upon a swing in a second floor window advertising her wares, A Voodoo shop, Pralines, Beignets and the instant immersion into the diverse and rich regional music. An elderly man on the corner played sax every day, and I dropped a dollar in his hat and sat on the curb to listen, before racing back to the hotel, lest anyone discover I was not swimming and doing my geometry. Everyday that week held a new auditory epiphany, including not all Marching Bands were geeky!

The most magical time, was between dusk and late night and the Quarter seemed to come alive with sound that seeped out of alleys, crowded little doorways, street corners and clubs that were jumping with Blues, Cajun, Zydeco, Jazz, Ragtime, Swing and Gospel. I have been back to New Orleans a few times, but nothing will ever match the first time. It added the spicy aspect to an already eclectic music collection.

I was surprised to hear a push to have Mardi Gras declared a national holiday http://www.motionformardigras.com/ That will provide a good dinner topic discussion as I ease my offspring into a genre not on their iPod this week.

On Fat Tuesday we will cook Jambalaya, bread pudding, and decorate with garish Purple, Green and Gold symbolizing Justice, Faith and Power. We will talk about the intricate process by which the date of the holiday is determined, and the historical context of Mardi Gras. And the music? It is good to expand your children’s horizons, even if they scowl. Lucky for them, amazon.com was out of “Learn to Cajun Dance.”

I did find a courageous author who covered many facets of this music. Although anyone who starts down this path, find's it turns out to be much longer and wider than imagined.

It is easy to see how this Contemporary Blues Artist received four nominations for the 2009 Blues Music Awards. Her music speaks to redemption and healing, defined by experience. For those of us in the Midwest, Magness will be in Minneapolis. MN on May 22 and Cedarburg, WI on May 23.

I first heard her song "You Were Never Mine," and it stays with me to this day.

Yesterday appeared to be KWS day at my house. First, my oldest debates with me during a car ride, that Blue on Black, which was playing on XRT, here in Chicago, was a cover and was really, Nickleback's song. He is 20. He knows everything. Just ask him. Now, Blue on Black is by far not my most favorite Kenny Wayne Shepherd song, but, Nickleback? It was a long drive. (Revised February 21. Much to my chagrin, two of my favorite internet Blues DJ's have now told me Nickleback did indeed do Blue on Black, and one of them rumor has it, even played it. However, I can only say, on the fateful date in question, during the long drive, it was indeed KWS, not Nickleback. Maybe, I should fit a few more parenting classes into my schedule, as wearing headphones and driving doesn't seem like a good behavior to model.)

Then, while waiting around, I began to read the insert of the 12 Day's Out CD, and I knew why I admired this young performer so much. You see, I have seen him live, and I know, what he can do with a guitar. But I had no idea, at the depth of his words as he recounted the making of that release, day by day, adding personal insight. I like seeing the whole picture behind an artist, it helps me appreciate the details. When I listen to 12 Days Out, the songs will be richer, for the stories not told in the lyrics, but behind the scenes.

There is no cure for Blue's Lovers

We all come to the Blues in different ways. Some, were born into it, experiencing first hand it's history. Some, crossed over from another genre, realizing perhaps, that the style of music was related to another. I was amazed to learn I might have been a Blue's Lover far longer than I suspected, given my affinity for Cream, Janis, Jimi, those Vaughn Brothers and boogie.

For some of us, we fell deep in love with the Blues, the moment we first encountered it, remembering every detail of when and where and what and who. And, for a real Blue's Lover, once we have felt it, it never let us go. The one thing, nearly almost all Blue's aficionados admit to is this - Once you come to the blues, it enfolds you, and settles deep into your soul. And, for a real Blues Lover, once we have felt it, it never let us go. It is a powerful way, to cope with the trials of life. I am sure someone, has studied the psychology behind it, maybe I will research that, while listening to some of my favorite internet blues radio stations.

I recently came across a site that I think most blues lovers can relate to. Their motto is, "No cure, no recovery." The group started as a tribute to honor the beloved Stevie Ray Vaughn. It is just the kind of quirky site, I can relate to, so I had to email and ask if they were still in business and if they would be updating soon. The good news is, YES & YES! I like the tag you can embed, addiction humor aside.

So You Want To Compose Songs

This month is "February Album Writing Month," and for once, that is not something I made up.

If you are a musician or songwriter, OF ANY LEVEL, or just always thought about it, do yourself a favor and check this out. www.fawm.org I participate in two similar events only for writing, and won't lie. It is a lot of work, but it is a cool discipline to finish those projects I know you have been procrastinating on!

Also, thanks to one of my writing groups, Inksters, if you are inworld in Second Life, there is a group formed to help support each other through this month's creative adventure. Just search "fawm."

Also, I am very excited to announce the purchase of a sim, called "My Blues Haven" under the www.junkyardblues.com estate. Cruisin' For Some Bluesin'

What happens when you cross a Chicago Winter with a serious case of wander lust?

You email Leanne at http://www.bluescruise.com/ and ask if there are any last minute cancellations for this weekend. Even the most spontaneous of us, might just need an extra day, or 60 to get a passport. But, it is a darn good cure for the Winter Blues, and as I gazed over the fall cruise, I saw I could spend the week with not only Kenny Wayne Sheppard and those Baker Brooks Fellas, which truly is my idea of heaven, but you also get to see Buckwheat Zydeco, Susan Tedeschi, Elvin Bishop, Tommy Castro, Rod Piazza, Fiona Boyes, and the IBC winner from Memphis the first weekend in February. And, Cabo San Lucas. Did I book it? You will just have to see in October!

Then, I thought anywhere South, and soon would do. Remembering The Blues Foundation and their "Battle of The Blues," or more formally known as, The IBC (International Blues Challenge) was set to occur I had to look them up as I recalled Beale Street, my first bowl of grits, greens, and something with pork innards. Mmm...I love Memphis. This year, there is exciting news! They will also have a youth showcase encouraging and ensuring another generation of Blues Lovers out there! Looking to contribute? I resigned myself to staying local, and glanced over who was playing where and when. I am already yearning for the Chicago Blues Fest experience. I liked the crowd size of the very first one, yes I was there, but you know, they just get better and better. And this year is looking like no exception. And, it is free! To, all my blues loving friends in Second Life, I dare you, bring your non-pixel selves out to the Windy City and catch some authentic Chicago Blues!

Discovering "Painkiller"

There is magic in his fingers, and I clearly can feel it, followed by wit, and playfulness in his lyrics "A Good Fool is Hard to Find."

I wonder how I could have missed a talented Blues man who knows what to do with a guitar with over a decade of impressiveness? Feeling much like a Catholic School Girl, allowed to study Zen, or (something secular and seductive) for the first time, I am in total infatuation with this style that mixes My Sweet Home Chicago and West Coast Blues with a little Rockin' Soul. And, bonus, the voice is pure heat.

How did I find him? Dreaming about Crusin' with Blues artists, listening to some Ronnie Baker Brooks and checking out Blind Pig Records web site. I am not normally a big Contemporary Blues fan, growing up between Chicago and East Saint Louis, I love Chicago Blues and the St. Louis Cardinals, and rarely notice anything outside of my first loves. But along came this man from San Francisco.

Before I knew it, I was listening to "Painkiller" mp3's, watching videos on You Tube, and finally, entered TOMMY CASTRO into Google search. That's when I knew, it wouldn't be long before he made my Valentine's Day wish list. Er, his CD, I mean. Although, there is just something about a Blues Player, ah well, another post perhaps. Let's talk about MUSIC.

"Painkiller" is his newest release, and won a Blues Music Award, "Contemporary Blues Album of the Year" 2008. It is not Tommy's first mention of fame, in my google finds, he has been making news since 1996. I felt a little BB in him, but his style is all his own. And I know, there will be some discretionary spending, even in times like these, on Mr. Tommy Castro and his talented band. (Oh yes, HOT SAX warning!)

For my Second Life Blues Loving Friends who will be in Las Vegas over Valentines Day weekend, heads up! So will Tommy! I know who I would want to see that weekend! And for my Second Life DJ Friends, you can expect more requests, check out Painkiller, it will play well for you! (And if it doesn't, I will buy the CD from you!)

Experiencing Buddy Guy @ Legends

Last night, I watched Buddy Guy perform live at his club Legends, in Chicago. Hard to believe that club is now twenty years old. Pulling into the snow covered parking lot, I glanced over the backside of a building that could best described as both beloved and dinghy, or more to the point, authentic. (www.buddyguys.com) If you want glitz and neon and “shows,” go to Vegas. If you want to experience authentic Chicago Blues, come to Chicago. That’s my feeling.

Entering the dark club about 5 PM for a 9 PM show, I took note of something a friend of mine in Second Life had said, regarding a resemblance of a blues club in SL, Toby’s and the RL, Legends. (but no booths or poseballs..lol) Walking through, we somehow managed to miss the last two chairs. That is significant, (because at $40 a ticket, a bargain, in my opinion,) I begrudgingly resigned myself to standing the entire night leaning against a ledge. Besides, how hard could it be to eat the Chicken Andouille Jambalaya standing in heels for hours?

A couple beers, some nice conversation, and people had started wandering in over the next couple of hours. Ordering some of that soul food, and a little Jose Cuervo to go with it, I was in heaven. The food? Fantastic! Jambalaya so authentic, I got a spice induced hot flash, and in Chicago in the Winter, that’s not all that bad a thing. The night sped by, thanks to the help of a great waitress. Whatever she makes, it’s not enough. Fast, efficient, helpful, and she even, was kind enough to ask people if chairs were taken for us. The guitars behind the bar, told their own story, as my eyes alighted upon a certain polka dot one. The mural near the restrooms also caught my eye. Ten years ago, it would have been filled with smoke, fortunately that was not the case.

The crowd thickened, and there was little room for plates of food, or drinks. Most ate standing up, holding their plates precariously. (You eat gumbo standing and you will feel accomplished too! )

Why is it in crowded places, people who feel the need to move about in a hurry, think its perfectly acceptable to put their hands on your shoulders, give you a little massage as they move you over, or, the most startling, put their hands on your hips and move you! My personal space was invaded by total strangers more times than I could count, and Jose was not helping. One man started to reach under the ledge for the coat hook, and brushed my skirt, to hang his jacket beneath where I was leaning! I know, the look I gave him, must have surely sent a clear message, because he backed off and went to the other side of the room. Now don’t get me wrong, I am moderately friendly and social, but my purse was on that hook! And, I don’t need a lot of personal space, but my posterior is off limits, unless I know you!

Both preceding acts were fantastic. An old school acoustical duo (Eddie Taylor, Jr.?) played from 430 to 6. The pair set the perfect mood for a night of Blues. I felt like I could be sitting on a porch, listening to some of the keepers of the genre, relaxing. (By that time, sitting was a reoccurring thought.)

The opening act, Big James and the Chicago Playboys (www.bigjames.com) is a band to pay attention to. They recently toured with Buddy, signed with Blind Pig Records, have a new CD coming out this spring and a bit of trivia, won an award at the Jazz Festival in Vienne, France. Pretty good for a bunch of Southsiders! When they took the stage, it became apparent; we were in for a treat. They had the ability to connect with an audience, make Blues entertaining, incorporated humor, delivered on the music quality, and put a little funk into the Blues! My Second Life DJ friends and Blues Club owners should definitely take note of them, because their vibrant energy would translate into Virtual Reality well! You can be sure, I will actually join their fan club, and look for them again. I believe they are scheduled locally for Valentine’s Weekend, The Chicago Blues Fest weekend and The Blues on the Fox in June. Go see them. You won’t be disappointed. And listen for the “Leave Your Coat On” song! James and band, proved the Blues, could indeed, bring a smile to your face with some dam good keyboard, sax and trombone playing as well.

As the anticipation grew, waiting for Buddy to take the stage, the crowd settled into a position in which everyone in our general area could see. And, then it happened. Our little group of newly intimate strangers, attracted friends, and a jockeying of position started to occur. Suddenly the pair of late arriving young twenty something’s, both exceptionally tall, (6’6” and 6’2”) were standing in front of the 5’4” thirty something’s who shared a ledge with us. The couple who were well into their 50’s, on our other side, had no chance at all of seeing. Even asking politely for people to move back or over a few inches, as they were now blocking the vision that most of us had stood there for 3 hours to see, was met with indifferent shrugs or apologetic grimaces.

If you have never experienced BG live, you simply must. But go early and get a good table. Seriously. Every show is different, and the man is a true performer and artist. A living legend. Buddy’s comments are priceless, ranging from funny, pointed, sincere, to admonishing. He was fantastic, everything you thought him to be, and more. When he sings, he looks straight at you that glimmer in his eye. Even for the 5, what I assumed to be cognac’s he knocked back, the man went around the club several times, and he did a thigh shake that would make Tina Turner envious. I want his work out routine! He did some old favorites, he did several off of Skin Deep, and I have to say, when he said he felt good tonight, and was going to keep playing, no one thought of work the following day, or plane flights, or anything else. You know, when you are in the presence of greatness, time stops. Two things particularly struck me. The first was Buddy brought a young man, well really a boy, up on stage to play guitar with him. The boy had to be somewhere between 10 and 13. He was adorable with a tie around his hat for a brim, but when he started playing Buddy’s guitar, I think many jaws dropped in the house. Buddy asked the Father more than once, “Why in the F didn’t you bring him around sooner?,” and he was dead serious. The boy, was good. Better than good. It was innate talent. And I saw the future of the Blues, in that moment.

The next surprise was, Buddy left the stage at the end, and called up Ronnie Baker Brooks, once voted Best New Blues Artist, Best New Chicago Blues Artist, and Best Chicago Debut Blues CD with “Golddigger” (ten years ago) and not to mention the son of the great Lonnie Baker Brooks, to come finish the set, as singer and guitar player, so he could do autographs. Now, one might think that it would be a let down, but it was far from it. Ronnie played well with Buddy’s band. “Born in Chicago” never fails to light the blues flame in fans. It’s not his Daddy’s blues, but his own. Looking at his schedule, it makes me want to spend Valentine’s Day with him!

So, as the night came to an end, and I watched Ronnie and Buddy’s keyboard player communicate non-verbally, I had to smile. You have to admire a man, who so obviously shares his stage, and encourages younger talents. It is not the mark of a great musician; it is the mark of a superb human being.

BG got it right, on his new CD, Skin Deep. Which of course, I got autographed. It was all I could do, standing inches from him, to keep from making a blathering idiot of myself, but I managed a sincere, “Thank you,” which was for much more than the autograph. It was for what he has done for Chicago Blues, education about the Blues, encouraging the next generation of Blues artists, and, the simple fact, his music speaks to my heart. As the lyrics go, “He can make an old woman, young, And he is the one and only, the one man I won’t forget,” at least when it comes to the Blues!

The No More Resolutions, Revolution!

Every year, I start off January with my Franklin Planner, PDA, and any other strategic planning tools I can dig up, in effort to develop and organize goals and objectives based on my values, and then plan and prioritize the resulting action steps and time lines. It is always, a work a Project Manager would be proud of. By March, or certainly April, I feel like an utter failure.

So, in my determination to live in the positive, I have no resolutions this year! YAY! I am free of that traditional enigma. If, I allow myself to have an overall commitment to self development and the priorities in my life, then my days are filled with things that add value to my well being and those I care about, resulting in a feeling of positive accomplishments instead of failure!

Does that mean I still need my planner? Of course! Every month, week and day will include “A NEW CATEGORY,” in addition to - mundane chores, deadlines, kid’s activities, appointments, volunteer activities, commitments, social engagements, and general responsibilities of life that must be addressed. This approach of incorporating a new category vs. resolutions on a regular basis will likely start out as a discipline, which in time; hopefully will result in natural positive changes and behaviors, experiencing that distinct difference between “existing” and “living.”

That is the next step in my continual effort to play Humpty Dumpty with myself. In the past year, I have at least found most of the pieces, and begun to glue them back, but there is still work to do. Somewhere, in the past decade, key pieces were lost, shattered and damaged beyond repair. (Hence my love of Blues songs, like SoulShine or with “Broken” themes) For the first time, in years, I have permission, to make myself a priority, to recognize, acknowledge, and even work to fulfill my own needs, and to believe “I am worth it.” It is a paradigm change, (to borrow an old Change Management term from the 90’s) to understand it is not selfish, to recognize one must replenish the well, to be able to go on giving out water, to those that thirst deeply.

So, this year, I am going to do things, differently.

I will focus on 7 general positive practices: Be a consistent supportive, involved, attuned parent. Be on top of the IEP’s and 504’s (www.chadd.org)

Improve my writing, consistently writing 500 words a day 5-7 days a week, and eventually returning to competition and publication.

Return to my innate nature as an optimistic, continual learner.

Nurture spirit, mind, body and soul. Promote and model healthy lifestyle habits. Review My Quadrants of Living, in order to make effective changes and move on. Re-establish personal boundaries, including avoiding people and activities that do not add value to my life, or worse, are emotionally or mentally destructive. I will only invest in people, projects, activities, and groups who value my relationship with them, and I will only invest at a 50/50 level, not at 110% and 10% ratio.

I will continue to explore VR, the Metaverse (http://www.metaverseroadmap.org/overview/) primarliy in Second Life by; acquiring new skills, programs, and tools, as I discover my inner geek; participating actively in the Writer’s community, teaching building to those who wish to learn, and enjoying Live Music Performances and select DJ’s on a limited basis. I will devote my time and talents to people, activities, and groups that give a return on my investment.

I will no longer allow myself in a virtual world, to be taken for granted, to be amusing arm candy, or be someone else's emotional punching bag, for their issues. Inconsiderate virtual friends, won’t be in my world/s. (http://arianeb.com/more3Dworlds.htm)

Lastly, I will never again, make someone/something a priority in life, who/which is incapable of reciprocity. Life, in all its forms, is worth sharing with people, just not all people.

Those are my draft priorities for 2009. How does that translate to My Franklin Planner entries for actionable steps in January?

Get a new book/DVD from the library on - gasp - Photoshop, Tai Chi, Reiki, conversational German, writing a better short story, discovering the art of Bonsai or whatever strikes my fancy at the moment and falls under the category of self improvement. (Done)

Meet a friend at the Y, work out, and enjoy the sauna. Take the yoga class. Plant something.. (Partially done)

Travel and explore some place new. Do that weekend/daytrip away. (Planned/paid/ and scheduled!)

Dance, for the love of it, feeling my Celtic roots. (Feeling my unused muscles is more like it!)

Continue exploring a spiritual path, even if it is not, the path of my past. (To do, research)

Make a difference to someone, everyday, in my family, community, or online. (ongoing)

Allow myself to be at peace, to let go of grief, guilt, anger and pain exploring meditation, genealogy, and the relationship of genetics to health. (it is an ongoing process)

Have a glass of good wine & take a long, luxurious bubble bath. (Completed, to be repeated at least weekly!)

Make sleep a priority, and awake ready to write. (Still working on the first part)

Register for that 24 hour short story contest on January 24th. (Done!)

May the year 2009, be the year of change and hope, not only for our nation, but for all of us.

Virtual Illusions (Life in SL)

It has now been 14 months since I wandered from the world of online Role Playing with one of my rp partners back to Second Life, for round 2. My first foray was in '04 with some Gorean Friends from another 3D gaming environment much like SL. Only my computer really, really hated SL. Often, I ask myself, just what it is I hope to find here, what I want to get out of it, and pretty much like my first life, I enjoy exploring, learning, meeting people, hanging with friends, good music and the shoe fetish I could never afford rl!

The only difference between this round, and the last? I am not role playing. But, Second Life is a "Game" right? Perhaps not quite like WoW or Wii, and you can find role play in various genre's if you look. But, it's not "real" right? Just pixels on a screen? For many, SL is an avenue to escape the mundane, to anonymously explore things that might be forbidden in your first life, or, to become something else or someone else altogether, for a little while. You are only bound, by your own lack of creativity in SL. I am reminded of the song about the kid who comes home from school and changes from an unknown geek, into the hot, successful, sports car driving, chick magnet in LA as he assumes the role of online Lothario, having three-way chats.

For others, like myself and 90% of my SL friends, my SL avie is better dressed, has better curves (that you can inflate or deflate depending on the style of clothing), infallible hair, awesome dance techniques which are shown often, and even occasionally with a member of the opposite sex. And yet, she is pretty close to me in many respects. I write, she belongs to writer's groups. I love the blues, she explores blues live performances and clubs. I enjoy teaching, she teaches building classes. I enjoy selling things, she has two stores. If I did not live in the worlds most obnoxious climate, and suffer sever weather envy, I would want to live on that nice Caribbean island that she does, with palm trees and hammocks. She also seems to have my same sense of humor, horrid typing and spelling abilities, and the ability to tell if someone is genuine or not. She is a bit direct, blunt, and is most likely a Sagi as well. She has a fierce sense of loyalty and justice. She may not stick up for herself, but no one, causes her friends issues. She never starts anything, but she might finish it. She has loved, she has lost, she has known great sorrow, and great inspiration. She has made good friends, bad mistakes, and questionable choices. Does that make her real, or not? Just part of a game? Or a part of me that exists in a different reality? Do they have to always be the same?

I am not sure. I am looking for answers that no one else can answer for me. I suspect it is different for everyone. One thing I am thankful for.... I do not have to contend with the amount of drama or trouble makers that I seem to encounter online, in my RL. Perhaps that is a good reason, not to live in SL. There are no alts, guys pretending to be girls, people who tell you one thing and do another, and for the most part, it is much easier to bitch slap someone rl that hurts you, than online. I am still working on that animation.

One thing you can be sure of, when she hurts, I feel it. Hell of a game.
